Beauty and Attraction
“Opposites do attract” is the law of attraction, at least where electromagnetism is concerned. But there are laws about attraction between two people? “In a world full of strangers” as a line in a song popular in the 1980s go, have a clear set of rules that allows two people to fall for each other?
It has been interesting about attraction and chemistry
According to scientists, the attraction between animals of the opposite sex is all about chemicals called pheromones. Effect of pheromones in insect behavior is the most widely studied today. It has been observed, at least in some experiments, that pheromones are responsible for communication among same species and colony of ants. Horrible odor released by skunks to ward off enemies is said to be a kind of pheromone. Several types of apes rub pheromone-containing urine on the feet of potential partners to attract them. Some scientists believe that animals (usually women) such as insects and mammals send chemical signals to tell them that the male species, their genes are different from them. Variations of genes important in making the race with a chance of a better life. Perfume industry has used pheromones as a way to enhance their sexual attractiveness itself with the opposite sex. Animals such as whales and musk deer are hunted for these chemicals.
Recently, scientists will look for people who have pheromones and its role in mate selection. There are many conflicting views in the fields of biology, chemistry, genetics, and psychology. Most scientists insist that it does not exist, or if they do not play a role in sexual attraction between a man and a woman. But new research such as that conducted by Swiss researchers from the University of Bern led by Klaus Wedekind are slowly making scientists rethink their stand. Their experiment involved women sniffing the cotton shirts of different men during their ovulation period. It found that women prefer the smell of men’s shirts are genetically different, but also share similarities in women’s genes. This, as in the case of insects and other mammals, is to ensure better and healthier characteristics for the future of their children. But researchers also cautioned that preference for male odor is affected by the woman’s ovulation period, the food people eat, perfumes and scented body products, and use of contraceptive pills.
Does personality figure in sexual attraction?
Yes, but so is your perception of a potential mate’s personality. According to research conducted by Klohnen, EC, & S. Luo in 2003 on interpersonal attraction and personality, someone’s sense of self and his or her perception of his or her better half were found to be strong determinants of attraction in hypothetical situations. What does that tells us? We prefer a certain type of personality, which draws you to someone. But apart from the actual personality of person, which can only be verified through close interaction through time, it is your perception of candidates that attracted you to him, if the person you love actually kind of personality or not. This might explain a general statement to hear from men and women on their failed relationships: “I thought he was such a man.”
So how prominent is attraction in a relationship?
You’ve probably heard that attraction is in the introduction, or a factor in the relationship. Most likely, at least initially, but interest alone will not sustain a connection. Attraction makes you see someone of the opposite sex, but once you know the person more, attraction is one consideration. Shared values, dreams, and passions become more significant in long-term relationship.
So I should stop trying to be interesting?
More than trying to be physically attractive, work on all aspects of your health: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Physical attraction is still a precursor. Remember, biology predisposes us to choose the healthy gene partners. Where your emotions are concerned, just ask yourself this: Will I want to spend time with someone who feels insecure about herself? Probably not! There is wisdom to know yourself: who you are, your beliefs, values and dreams. Do not pretend to be someone you are not. Fool other people by making them think that you share their values and beliefs will only lead to disappointment. If you are healthy in all aspects, attractiveness becomes a factor and not the catch all. As mentioned in the research of Klohnen and Luo, feelings that a person has about things like self-security, perhaps even beyond attraction. But remember: do these things for yourself and not for others. Only then can you really take advantage of attractiveness as a person.
